Great News! New late night, early morning and Saturday am opening hours

We are pleased to inform you that we now open late every Monday night at the university site until 9pm, open an early morning from 7am at the King St site, the day changes each week to give the most choice, and Saturday mornings 8-12pm at the Bailrigg University site. Patients registered at King St or the University can be seen at either site and we have our own car park and level entry access at the university site.

The receptionists will be available during these times to take your phone queries at these times for booking appointments during the week, helping you with Choose and Book or ordering prescriptions or checking results.

The out of hours service will still be there for all emergencies, telephone advice and house calls. Our extra appointments are pre – bookable only and not for same day emergencies.

Everyone can make an appointment at these extra times and we think they may be particularly useful for the elderly who may need a relative to drive them there after work and for people who work full time and find it difficult to take time off to visit the GP for reviews.

So far the feedback from patients has been excellent and we value any comments you may make about this service, as we do aim to offer you the very best care we can.  

Appointments

Booking appointments online - All available slots are for routine appointments only.

For any specific clinics or an appointment with one of our  Practice nurses please contact the Surgery.

We offer a variety of types of appointments at different times of the year. We have a same day nurse/doctor clinic, nurse practitioner clinics, appointments with nurses and GP appointments.

NHS targets currently set out that all patients will be able to see a primary care professional within 24 hours and a GP within 48 hours.

To ensure we can do this we run nurse/doctor clinics for people who want to be seen on the same day. The patient is seen by the nurse initially who, in 65% of cases, can deal with the problem herself, and if she cannot she refers the patient on to the GP.

You can book an appointment with a GP or the nurse practitioner separately. We do not book very far in advance with the GP because we find that more people forget to turn up, thus wasting valuable appointments.

Please remember we offer some same day appointments with doctors, some within 48 hours and some in advance by up to 4 weeks, but each doctor can only work so many hours in a day. You may wish to go to the King street Practice or the University Practice to see the doctor of choice if it is quicker.

All doctors and nurses have to work from both sites so this cuts down the number of appointments at each one. We do this to be fair to everyone.

Please be prepared to give the receptionist some details of your illness if you  are asking for an appointment so she can direct you to the quickest and most appropriate clinician and appointment. The receptionist are highly skilled and trained and are bound by the Practice and NHS code of confidentiality. You can of course refuse to do so if you prefer.

Nurse Practitioner Appointments

Tina is our nurse practitioner and works alongside the Doctors in the Practice to provide a medical service including holding her own surgeries. She can examine, diagnose new illnesses and make decisions regarding patient management on the basis of her assessment. She works along side the doctors and sees patients who need to be seen on the same day.

You may be offered an appointment with her as an alternative to a doctor. She has experience and training beyond that of a practice nurse and can usually deal with your problem herself. If she wants advice a doctor is available. She is also qualified for diabetes care and sees patients who are newly diagnosed and those who need an annual review  

Home Visits

The Doctors will visit the housebound, the very elderly and terminally ill patients at home if there is a medical need for a home visit.  Please tell the surgery as soon as possible that day if you think a home visit is needed, ideally before 10.30am. The Doctor will then decide where it is best to see you. 

For instance babies and children with fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, earache or a rash should be brought to the surgery and seen quickly.  Adults with similar illnesses can also be seen quicker at the surgery.

Home visits will be made only on medical grounds and not on social grounds (such as lack of transport).  Please remember 6 patients can be seen in the surgery in the time it takes to do 1 home visit.

Telephone Advice

All the Doctors are willing to speak to patients over the telephone.  Please ring the surgery if you need telephone advice and the receptionist will book you in to a “telephone advice appointment”. You will be advised by the receptionist when the Doctor will call you back.

We have found that these are very useful and popular ways of consulting your GP without having to make an appointment. The receptionists have a list of things that are suitable for a telephone consultation, so please be guided by them.

Emergencies

What is an emergency?
When it comes to your health or the health of someone in your family, it is often very obvious if the person is seriously ill and needs immediate emergency care. An emergency is a critical or life-threatening situation.

To help you decide what a critical situation is; here are some examples:

• unconsciousness
• a suspected stroke
• heavy blood loss
• suspected broken bones
• a deep wound such as a stab wound
• a suspected heart attack
• difficulty in breathing
• severe burns
• a severe allergic reaction.

There are a few things that you should remember in any emergency. These will help you to deal with the situation quickly and efficiently.

• Stay calm, shout for help. You may need to instruct someone to telephone 999. Make sure they know where the ambulance has to come to, and they have some details about the person who is injured or ill.
• Don't put yourself in danger. For example, if someone has been electrocuted, make sure you switch off the power supply before touching them.
• Do everything you can to help the person.
• Don't give the person anything to eat, drink or smoke.
• Don't stick anything in their mouth.
• Follow the instructions the ambulance service call handler may give you.

Lancaster University Students
Anyone living on university campus in Lancaster and needing an ambulance should dial 999 on the internal system rather than a mobile. The call is channeled through security, who can meet the ambulance and quickly direct to the scene. In term time Security will also ask a Nurse to attend until the ambulance arrives. However if you are not near an internal telephone do not delay. Make a call by any means available. After the call contact security on 01524 5-94541 to let them know you are expecting an ambulance

Out of Hours Service

Morecambe Bay Primary Care Trust are responsible for providing emergency medical cover when the surgery is closed. This service is called Bay Urgent Care and is based both in Lancaster and Morecambe. BUC provides emergency medical care during evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays

Upon contact with Bay Urgent care you will be asked to give details to a receptionist and will then be able to speak to a doctor or nurse on duty. This doctor may be from another local practice. The doctor or nurse may ask if you are able to travel to attend the Centre to be seen, or may arrange a visit if necessary
